La Intervención Asistida con Animales (IAA) es una terapia con un enfoque multidisciplinar, en la que se plantean objetivos terapéuticos y se saca el mayor provecho al vínculo que se establece entre la persona y el animal para crear un ambiente rico en estímulos. Lo que permite una mayor motivación a participar en el ambiente social y fomenta la atención y la concentración en el entorno inmediato para llevar acabo con éxito la terapia.
Este tipo de tratamiento permite mejorar aquellas patologías que afecten tanto a la salud física como a la salud mental. Los animales, sirven como nexo de unión entre el terapeuta y el paciente, que de una manera natural y espontánea mantienen contacto, sin que la persona sea consciente del tratamiento que está recibiendo.
