Fundación Altarriba managed the "Sheltering Center for Abandoned Pets" (CAAD) more than three years, since February 1st 2002 to June 12th 2005. The initial agreement of two years was later extended for a year more. The CAAD is the city dog-pound of Mataró (Barcelona), a city whose population is over 100.000. The management was 100% a protectionist one, including a No-Killing policy from the very first day. On June 13th 2005 management was taken on by the Mataro Protection Society after a public competition for wich Fundacion Altarriba did not enter.

No-Killing was the most relevant and important fact regarding the management policy promoted by Fundacion Altarriba and the City Council for this shelter; mercy-killing was also highly restricted -on the veterinarian's advice, to those animals suffering from a chronic and irreversible disease and feeling a hard pain.

For the first time in Spain a city dog-pound decided such a protection policy, and this as a result of the long talks both entities had for a year.

This new policy of the City Council of Mataró regarding pets, and developed by Fundación Altarriba, has gone further that management, as it also considered other working lines essential to increase public awareness of animal welfare. An invitation to local Societies to take part in this common target was one of the aims.
