José Saramago - Portugal Born in Azinhaga (Portugal) in 1922, he published his first novel, "Land of Sin" in 1947. He is a sceptic intellectual who has always committed himself to an ethical and aesthetic attitude, against political bias. Human cruelty exceeds any limit" (Clarin, January 2001). His work is considered as one of the most important in contemporary literature, and has received numerous international distinctions, culminating in the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998. His last work, published in 2002, is "The duplicate man".
